Best recognized for his brilliant white hair and smile, Lowell was a stellar leader and advocate for the profession of optometry. He was a VOA President, VOA OD of the Year, VOA Distinguished Achievement Award recipient, served on the Virginia Board of Optometry, Chair of the VOA Legislative Committee, year long leader of the VOPAC Board, VOA Trustee to the Southern Council of Optometrists, and after serving through officer structure, President of the Southern Council of Optometrists (SECO). It was under Dr. Gilbert's leadership and guidance that the VOA achieved legislation authorizing Virginia doctors of optometry to prescribe and treat with therapeutic pharmaceutical agents. A gentleman, a fierce advocate for his profession, a man of his word, and a true Virginian... Dr. Lowell Gilbert.
