The American Optometric Foundation is professional optometry’s charitable organization. It maintains the Optometry’s Fund for Disaster Relief which provides financial relief after disasters, including hurricanes. Financial “gifts” of up to $2,000 may be available. While the program requires OD practices to have suffered some physical damage, it does account for other factors. Go to http://www.optometryscharity.org/ofdr/ to download an application if interested and to view criteria. Funds for this program are generated through contributions by optometrists across the nation. In the past, VOA members have received assistance from this fund following floods.
